Help needed in why my in-pig gilt(7wks)is off colour. She was seen by our vet when he came to the farm for something else(so not a pig vet) who said her temp, respiration, eyes all seemed normal, no cough, but she is quiet, slow to get up for her food, and then doesn't want much when she gets there. She wanders around for a bit, then goes back to bed.Her urine seems ok, no nasties in it, her dung is a bit hard and dry, partly because she isn't eating enough. The vet wasn't much help, and spoke to one of their pig vets, who thought a urine infection,.... but no temperature doesn't add up.
Please help me |

Is there any sign of sun stroke? Is she sunburnt? Is she on her own or in with others?

She is inside an openfronted shed, I thought perhaps she had heatstroke because this came on on Tuesday after a really hot, muggy day, but it has been fresher since then.

I have a sow with the same kind of symptons and she has not beeen right for about 2 weeks. She will eat porrige and fruit and veg but turns her nose up at pig food. I saw that she has discharge from her vagina one day and she has had a 5 days course of anti biotics. I did pop a big boil type thing which she has had for a while near one of her teats, could she have caught something through this? Any advice would be great. She was in-pig as well but has obviously absorbed at some point, could this have caused any problems?

after about 3 weeks of trying to get my sow better she stopped eating all together so I got the vet out. He diagnosed constipation which had been something I had tried to treat to start off with. The problem was how we were going to get her moving especially as she wouldn't eat a single thing. I rang me later on and told me to collect a bottle of liquid parafin from the surgery. One 30ml dose squirted in her mouth that evening did the trick. The next mroning she had had a real good clear out and was eating the food we had left out for her. She does seem to suffer with constipation so will give her a weekly dose of liquid parafin to keep things moving!

What a relief (literally) for both you and her
Its through reading some of the queries etc on here that one builds up a bit of knowledge about potential problems and what to look for and suspect and subsequently treat.

I had similar problems with 2 of my sows just after farrowing, A bucketful of nettles given as suggested and they were much perkier the next day.
