Well the weather forecast for Ryedale show yesterday was truly awful but as usual they were wrong, we got a good dry day! There was Welsh, Middle Whites, Saddlebacks, Tamworths and us (GOS). The white pigs and saddlebacks both had their own classes which left us up against the Tammies. The judge was Phil Fowlie. Polly was first up in the gilt-in pig class and got a third place. Next was Clover in the Jan Gilt classes, she was very happy and cantered about. The judge looked at her for ages and came back a 2nd time. She was eventually awarded 4th place. We hadn't expected anything at all for her as she has developed an underline fault.OH said he thought she would have won except for that fault as she looks so well. Polly got best GOS in show. We also took our 8yr old niece with us, she stayed over the previous night and helped prepare the gilrs and looked after them while they were penned at the show. She has entered the young handlers at Tockwith in August. Yesterday although there wasn't officially a YH class they decided to have one as there were so many had come with their parent's pigs. Our niece watched with great interest and hopefully picked up some tips. So all in all we had a good day. Thornton-Le-Dale is our next outing on 4th Aug. |

I will put on the agenda for the next Committee meeting about sponsoring a Novice exhibitor's class. As for the show, in fairness to everyone it should be as central as possible. I could get such a class put on at Three Counties at Malvern next year on say the Saturday and those that felt confident enough could also then enter the Rare & Minority Breeds Show on the Sunday. Or you may prefer to try for a smaller show over just one or two days. Perhaps others could list their ideas of which shows they would prefer? |

Hmm Malvern is not exactly central, more than 5hrs travelling for someone like me in yorkshire or 3 or 4 hrs travel from say Norfolk! Its a pity a livestock show won't be resurrected at Stoneleigh as this was probably the most central location of all. Is there still Warwickshire county show that would put on some pig classes? Say the Rugby area where the M6/M1 mets and would give good access from all parts of the UK. |

Ladies - ask and your wish...
I have just spoken to Viki Mills. The RBST are having a show of Native Breeds at the NEC Birmingham on 7 & 8 September as part of the Dairy Event. They need more pigs. I mentioned your postings and she tells me that whilst not scheduled, she would be happy to put on a Novice class for those who haven't shown before and I would expect that you could do a lot worse than enter the other classes at the same time. You will need to contact by the end of this coming weekend. Her numbers are 01363 82465 or 07843 301903. Email is victoria.mghugh@virgin.net
Go for it! |
