GOS Pig

Committee Elects New Honorary Life Members

At the latest committee meeting held at the Royal Show in early July, four new Honorary Life Memberships were conferred to individuals who had made a significant contribution to the Gloucestershire Old Spots pig.

Viki Mills and Anne Petch were both made Honorary Life Members for their work and dedication, particularly during the 1970s after the establishement of the RBST, to the GOS and indeed all rare pig breeds. They were both instrumental in setting up and running the Bloodline Surveys on behalf of the RBST and in keeping GOS and promoting them and encouraging others to do so.

Dave Overton was elected an Honorary Life Member having kept pedigree GOS pigs for a quarter of a century and having established the Exfold herd as a leader both in the showring and in the pedigree of all the top pigs in the breed today. A Founder Member of the Club, Dave was Chairman of the committee until the 2007 AGM.

Hunter & Tillie Brown live in an apartment in New York (but are intending moving to a more rural location in Connecticut). They do not keep pigs (yet?) but were Founder Members of the Club in 1990 and have closely and generously followed our work in helping to conserve the breed and expand numbers. Through their generous donation the Club was able to publish Rare Breed Pig Keeping in 2003 and following the appeal to help finance the Meat Quality tests in order to try and protect the integrity of GOS pork and bacon, they again responded most generously and have made a significant contribution to the success of Gloucestershire Old Spots pigs and as such are duly elected Honorary Life Members.

They join George Styles and Andrew Robinson. Others who were elected but who have since passed away include Jim Sherriff, John Green, Gordon Cullimore and Bart Shields all of whom made significant contributions through their breeding programmes.
